The first thing that hits me (especially on your forums) are the ads on your site. (A good rule of thumb is never have the first piece of content on your page be ads).
First the hompage:
As far as the layout, I like the colors and I think they work well to create a clean site. The first thing I would change is the text color of the blue tabs, black on that blue is kinda hard to read. Next, make sure that the overflow on the blocks is handled correctly, for example the login box overflows beyond its boundaries and makes it hard to read the content.
The biggest thing this page lacks is a focus. Nothing grabs my attention when I first visit the page, so I have no clue where to start looking. Lastly, the content "below the fold" (that makes me have to scroll) is often lost, so I would suggest either making it a subpage or bringing attention to it some how. I think these minor improvements will make a big difference to the homepage, you are already on the right track it just needs to be polished.
Now onto the forums:
Again I like the colors. One thing that puzzles me is why you have two sets of ads almost back to back, when visitors see a lot of ads it turns them off and they will often leave. Next there are A LOT of pictures on this page, the (un)read indicator and a thumbnail for each board is a lot. I would suggest making each a little smaller and possibly eliminating the thumbnails all together, as it does not add anything the site. Lastly, I would consider removing the animated characters for rank, animations like that can really turn people off.
Other than that, good job creating a successful forum site.
