At first glance it just seems like it needs something...maybe more color, or higher contrasting colors. The yellow header just feels very undefined. The same goes for the menu on the left, it just seems to float there in a sea of white space, maybe it's because my screen res is so high, I don't know.
I would try defining the menu area some how for starters.
It's a bookstore site, and I haven't come across too many exciting bookstore sites, so I guess your challenge would be to set yourself apart from all the other sites through your design.
Ask yourself this: What about your site is going to convince someone to buy through your site rather than directly from amazon? What extra things could you offer you visitors?

I agree with cmonkey in that it needs something to give it a little "pizzazz"... that pale yellow is a little bland, especially when there is no other color than the blue of the hyperlinks to contrast it with.
The navigation on the left needs something to make it stand out... and please at the very least make the headings bigger than the other words... The "+" in front of the heading just doesn't work to draw your attention.
Good start! Good luck with it.

It seems like a simple, easy to navigate layout. I think it could use something to make it look a little better though, like more color. Maybe for the side menu area. Like some color to seperate the middle content from the side menus and ads.

The site is definitely bland. I'll agree with everyone on that.
Also, it looks like all of your items are being pulled from Amazon.com. My question for you is why would someone buy from your Web site (with no trustworthy reputation) as opposed to Amazon.com? The only way you could pull this off is by offering highly discounted prices (which I doubt you have control over). Another approach may be to develop a niche like cooking. Only offer cooking books and also feature recipes and other cooking related items (forums, articles) for the user. Just a thought.

Agreed, I would not buy from an amazon associate only because I know that come checkout time, I'm being forwarded to amazon.com anyways, so why not start at the source.
You're only going to be successfull at this endevor if you can find yourself a niche. That will also narrow down where you need to promote your site. If you happen to choose cooking, advertise on cooking forums, etc. You should also try and offer additional resources for the niche you choose, articles, etc.
You have to make people come to your site for reasons other than the books, which they can find dozens of other online bookstores. Once people have visited your site a few times they may start to buy from you.
Statistics say that people buy from a site after visiting it an average of seven times. That means you need to give people a reason to want to come back.

I like your website. The one piece of advice I will give is to survey your visitors. If you provide an incentive like 10% off if they take the time to fill one out, it will be an excellent tool for you. This kind of R&D will greatly assist you in providing the best products and services for your customers. Big companys are big companys because they do just that. Oh, and one other thing, the flag next to your business name sould be a book graphic, but that's just knitt pickin'. Over all I give it an 8.5!

My little 15" tft is used in our office as the screen to aim to get your site looking right on. Mine hardly ever displays sites OK unless good use of CSS has been included. If it looks right on my screen you've got it nailed. Basically larger font display than normal and different things begin to overlap one another. This has happened to yours. I have taken a screen-shot but having probs putting it on here. Post your email address and I'll forward it. Alt has anyone got simple instructions for placing an image in the forum ?

I see what you're talking about. That is because the font size you have on you're screen isn't the same size that I have designed my site with.
If you have a scrollable mouse you will be able to see what I'm talking about.
Hold the ctl button down on your keyboard then scroll with the wheel of your mouse up or down to adjust text size. and you will see that when everything fits that's the intended text size for the site.
but If you know how I can fix this let me know. and I will. Thank You.

You probably right about the font size thing. But if everyone but you is viewing the site improperly than it is probably time to fix it. This can be easily done by using a stylesheet. (.css) If you go to any good HTML resource Web site you can read all about them. If you use a stylesheet, everyone viewing the Web site will see the same font size/color.

Hi, I really like the selection of books and DVDs that you have.
The search box and the links on the left make it very easy to find anything.
I didn,t see a link explaining your privacy policy and shipping that might be something you should add in the future.
Good sales!

Hi.
It's still the same I'm afraid. CSS will allow you to set the size of your text in pixels, so that whatever resolution you are viewing at, the text size stays in proportion. What software did you use to create the site?

I used Frontpage 2003, but I don't understand. I have 3 computers... the resolutions are 800x600, one at 1024x768 and the one i do all of my design on which is 1280x1024. and on all 3 it looks fine.
but i think i know what you're trying to tell me. instead of using font-size: 10pt i should use 10px or something to that effect right ?
well still i hope i get mor einput just to make sure.... then i'll correct it later on today. if you want to check it out and see if it's looking right here's the URL: http://thebookshop.us and post the feedback on here.
Thanks.

I would suggest going for a different background colour on the left.
Also, why not have different colours for the different catagories?
Look along the menu on the top, I think you need to sort it so the text is in the middle, no sitting on the bottom, with a gap along the top.

The site looks ok, if a little bland, maybe try using more CSS?
Also it doesn't render 100% correctly on Mozilla Firefox!

I'm trying to figure out this Mozilla browser.... I downloaded the Mozilla suite that brings composer and everything and I try editing the page with it, but since my top graphics are positioned absolute (<div>). It doesn't let me bring it all the way to the top like FrontPage does, thats why it's not in the right place, and doesn't look right in mozilla as with Internet Explorer. the same thing with the poll, if anyone know how to fix this let me know.... I guess I'm going to be needing to use mod_rewrite to redirect all pages requested by opera mozilla safari to view a different page than that one designed for IE. Anyone know where I can get a tutorial on this ?
btw. here's the edited version for those browsers, http://thebookshop.us/test2.htm
Thanks.
thanks.

After a little work and readjusting of links and a little mod_rewrite I beleive I have it. All you Mozilla users out there try it.
