Firstly, don't worry about PageRank - there are more than 100 ways that Google assesses where pages are ranked in search engines, and PageRank is just one of out that 100+. Therefore, PageRank shouldn't be an issue - it's nice to have a little green bar in the toolbar as it adds a contrast to the grey, but it's not life and death.
Secondly, you should be aiming to get links for increasing and boosting your traffic - not for increasing worthless PageRank (well the colour thing aside, worthless). Link exchanges do work on a small scale just to initially get off the ground but rolling them out with more than 5 or whatever unrelated links is a pointless waste of space and time. Your main focus should be to provide unique, quality content that will make people want to naturally link to it, rather than offering them a link in exchange. I know this may be hard for a poker site, but the industry is very competitive so you'll have to stand out somehow to get the links.
1 more thing - don't go to blackhat SEO methods to try and improve PR as other sites in the industry might - it's a pointless waste seeking a worthless goal and Google will sooner or later discover and ban those methods, as it has already done to so many underhand SEO activities.
