actually people look at the number of posts and the date that user registered. many are researching about him on the forum and internet and if he's clean and old enough on this forum then 99% you can trust him.. old enough means 1 yr or more.. and some real posts. the best would be to find some proof that he was involved in another transaction and everything worked out complete. you can always ask him what other sites did he bought and ask the user of the seller.. etc..
anyway, you should let us all know about the name of the guy (if it turns out to be a scammer) so we can stay away from him..
ps: i know it looks funny that I have only 2 posts and I'm telling you how to trust people around.. my posts were gone after the move to the new host..
LATER EDIT: and if it comes to escrow, then go for escrow.com.. i wont trust anyother..
