Yahoo and Google
|

Hi everybody,
I applied so many different technics by doing my optimization, in order to be nice and friendly to all major search engines. My site www.supremedeal.com use to be more popular in Yahoo than Google. Then I desided to work on how to get more attention from Google, since Google currently is more popular than Yahoo. I recieved better results with Google, but I never realized that at the same time Yahoo will treat me worse than before and I lost my previouse popularity with Yahoo, which still visits my site by its Slurp.
I understand, those search engine use different algorythms, but in my case it looks they are opposite to each other - the better results with Yahoo, the worse in Google, the better in Google the worse in Yahoo.
That might be co-incedent. For example, if I put some of my keywords "supreme clothing" in Google, then my site is on the first output page. If the same phrase in Yahoo, the result is somewhere else. Before optimization results were opposite way.
Why it happen that way?
Thank you for your opinions.
Have a great day,
Peter

As it is known that the major SE’s use different algorithms and they also update their search results with different frequencies. Also Google relies more on off-page factors whereas yahoo on on-page factors and Google is fast in indexing the websites as compared to others with search results updated more frequently.
So there can be a number of possibilities which can vary the results in the SE’s.

Peter it really is a matter of different search engines using different algorithms so sometimes what you do to improve things in one engine may drop you in the other.
They're not opposites though. All major search engines place the most emphasis on links. Ultimately if you have enough of the right kind of links pointing to your site you should do well with all search engines.
Yahoo does put a little more emphasis on the on-page factors when compared to Google, but both will still place the most emphasis on links.
Aaron Wall wrote a great article a few months ago about the differences in each of the major search engines, which can tell you a lot more than I can.

Obviously Yahoo and Google use different algorithm but I still donīt see why, if you first optimised your on-page optimisation (to rank in Yahoo), and then did some link building, your positions dropped in Yahoo. Yahoo values more the on-page optimisation than Google, but their algorithms are not the opposite at all.

The thing is we don't know what changes were made to the site. I think it might be more than first optimizing on-page and then building links.
You're right though that the algorithms aren't opposite and you should be able to optimize for both. I just think here none of us knows specifically what was done.

It still looks like when Google start treating my site better, then Yahoo reduce my ranking in SERP by the major keywords. It could be coincedent, but I have to know what I'm doing wrong.

Hi,
normally when you are having good results with Google, this means your website is in good shape and optimization status.
In many cases, Yahoo takes some times before it gives proper and stable ranks to a website, so if you believe you are doing good on Google, continue and other search engines will reach you sooner or later.

I think you should concentrate on Google instead of Yahoo. Google is more popular and will send much more traffic. BTW vangogh I read that same article which you referenced here. I read it a while back though, so I can't recall exactly what the article said. The tips from Aaron Wall are quite useful though.

It's a good article isn't it? One thing though about Google is you still have to consider the people who use Google. Assuming you have a page that ranks as well in all the engines Google will obviously send the most traffic, but they might not be sending you the best traffic.
For example I find that of all the engines Google traffic has the lowest CTR on ads. That makes sense when you consider that Google users tend to be a little more tech savvy an so probably recognize ads as ads more often that MSN users.
Each search engine does get different people using them. I think Yahoo has a higher percentage of woman using it. So if your target market includes more women it might make more sense to rank well on Yahoo.

Let say, my customers for "supreme clothing" are mostly women, does it mean I have to apply some special technics in order to increase my Yahoo ranking? Are there special technics for Yahoo, Google or other SEs.
Have a great day,
Peter

Peter have a look through the article I linked to above in post #4. It will explain the differences between the search engines better than I can.
What I'm basically saying is you should do your best to learn which search engine your customers are likely to use more. Woman do use Google, but I think the percentage of women using Yahoo is more than the percentage of women using Google. That doesn't mean you don't want Google traffic. Google has so much market share that more women probably use Google than Yahoo, but percentage wise Yahoo may attract more women.
Ideally you should try to find out what search engine your customers use to land on your site. Not your visitors, but your actual customers.
Don't think of it so much as special techniques, but know that since each search engine has a different algorithm for ranking pages that different things will work better for each. Google for example places a lot of emphasis on authority at the moment while MSN is probably easier to rank using older tactics.

Yahoo and Google use different algorithm and completely different behavior with their localized versions. So, everyone must analise their target audience in terms of which is their search engine. Then, optimize your page for them.

Well.......both have different strategies. Google consider offpage factors and yahoo on onpage factors...........I think you haven't work on offfpage fators enough that's why you are not getting better results on google.
Try to get more quality liks and also remember to add your main keywords in anchor text. Also use bookmrking sites to submit your pages and other offpage activities.

I'm having the opposite problem. I find myself with a near 100% perfect record for common searches for my ranking in Yahoo, only after a month's SEO
Google on the other hand?
I'm on the 2nd page for my main search line, however I don't think my lack of google presence is because the algorythms are different.
GoogleBot won't spider my site! I keep getting network unreachable errors and the like.
Does anyone have any experience in solving this? I know its holding me back in google and I have no idea what do do with it at this point since the bot itself struggles to make a connection with my website.
